The Importance Of Connection For Your Atypical Child

The value of connecting with your atypical child cannot be overstated. There are benefits for your homeschool learning, but more importantly, connection lays the groundwork for lifelong stability and success.

You want a successful homeschool. You want to feel good about your time with your kids. You want to feel like you are giving them what they need and that you are doing the absolute best for them.

There is no better way to give your kiddos exactly what they need than intentionally connecting with them on a regular basis. Building a strong relationship with your child is essential in creating the homeschool you want. In short, you cannot over connect with your kids!

This can be difficult for us as homeschool parents to remember in the midst of academics and extracurriculars.

Value Relationship And Connection Above All Else In Your Homeschool

Some food for thought.

We can always remediate academics. We can always go back and watch a couple back-to-back documentaries about a time period in history. We can always find a math tutor to help our kids catch up.

But if we break up relationships or batter self-esteem, nobody’s going to learn anything.

Atypical Learners Need Safety And Security

Struggling with anxiety, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, or any of the other challenges are often associated with behavioral symptoms when it comes to learning. Kids tend to act up because they’re overwhelmed and overstimulated. The solution is helping our kids feel safe and secure. Creating an environment that allows them to be healthy and happy IS what helps them learn. This is part of academic performance.

They need us to connect with them at deep levels when they are wired differently than the typical population.  The truth is, as you develop deeper relationship, it becomes easier to identify their triggers and help them learn to cope with them. Your ability connect often becomes how to best help your child cope in all areas of their life.

The Basics Of Connecting With Our Atypical Children

There are a number of ways to connect with our children. Here are the ways that make sense for me in my home and that I encourage you to consider in yours as well. Research shows time and time again the value of these basic tenets.

  • Be your kid’s safe person
  • Identify triggers
  • Develop coping strategies together
  • Plan one-on-one time
  • Show love everyday.

I go into much more detail about each of these in today’s episode of the podcast.
