A Family-Friendly Homeschool Art Curriculum

.Using any kind of homeschool art curriculum has always caused problems around here. Molly adores art of any kind, and isn’t picky at all. She’ll try any medium, any craft, anything related to creativity…

Trevor… not so much.

Like many gifted kids, Trevor is a perfectionist. That perfectionism goes beyond a typical person’s desire to be good at what he or she does. His perfectionism can be debilitating. If he can’t be sure that what he pictures in his head will be the guaranteed outcome, he will completely shut down and refuse to try anything new. Art has long been one of his stumbling blocks.

Until now.

Last week we tried to beat the clock using the chalk pastel apple in under a minute tutorial on Hodgepodge and were all immediately hooked. We moved on to create tornadoes, and though Trevor, Logan, and I left the table to pursue other things, Molly kept creating.

All of the kids have asked to bring the chalk pastels out everyday since.

Chalk pastels are a fabulously fun {and forgiving} medium for kids and adults to use. They are:

  • inexpensive
  • readily available
  • blendable {so mistakes can be covered up}
  • fun

Have you tried using chalk pastels before?

Now that I know that even Trevor will happily create and follow along, I’m planning to use A Seasonal Start in Fall Chalk Pastels and Chalk Pastels Through the Seasons from Tricia and Nana over at Southern Hodgepodge as our homeschool art curriculum this year. Nana is Lucia Hames, a talented pastel artist on a mission to show artists of all ages just how easy it is to achieve beautiful results with simple materials.

Seriously, I’ve been on the search for something that will motivate Trevor to get creative with something other than Legos, and when he asked me on a Saturday morning if he could use the iPad to pull up some of Nana’s tutorials, I was thrilled. He got so into the artwork that he invited his friend, Obi Wan, to join him, and then created mini versions of his artwork to make it look like his action figure painted with the pastels, too.

Creativity, imagination, and play… all intersecting.

I highly recommend the chalk pastel tutorials by Lucia Hames {Nana} and Tricia Hodges over at Southern Hodgepodge. We’ll share some of our own creations along the way as we go through our year – I’m as excited about this medium as the kids are.

Have you ever used chalk pastels? Do you have great tips for breaking down the perfectionism and getting kids to create?
